Backcountry 3 is designed to level up your navigation skills and prepare you for formal avalanche education. Backcountry 1 and 2 Lessons or equivalent experience (comfort with your backcountry equipment and ability to transition and move on snow efficiently) is recommended. You’ll leave this course with:
Introduction to route planning, navigation tools, weather and avalanche forecasts, and other valuable skills to set you up to get the most out of your avalanche education
Clear understanding of what to expect in AIARE 1 and Avy Rescue courses
More confidence with uphill and downhill travel on variable terrain
This lesson includes an hour-long video and assignment focusing on how to use navigation tools and plan for the day (to be completed online at your own pace before your lesson).
All of our lessons target a 6:1 student-to-instructor ratio to ensure you get personal attention and reduce COVID risks. If you would like your group to have an instructor to yourselves, please book a Private Lesson or Guided Day instead.
Whenever possible we match students with similar downhill ability, and we do our best to pair splitboarders with splitboard instructors and skiers with ski instructors.
Please note: All participants are required to carry a beacon, shovel, and probe to leave the base area and participate in a lesson. Equipment rentals are available, and we recommend booking those in advance. Lessons do not include access to the mountain. Each participant in your group must reserve a day pass in addition to your lesson unless you have a Season Pass or you’re using part of a 4 Pack or 10 Pack.
