New for 2021/22! Reading terrain is an important skill to practice no matter how experienced you are. This course focuses on the basics of reading terrain and navigating in and around avalanche terrain when in backcountry winter settings. This course includes an hour-long video and assignment (to be completed online at your own pace before your lesson). The field portion of the course is an all-day, six-hour clinic that covers the following topics:
Using navigation tools for route planning and travel
Aligning risk management, avalanche problems, and the plan for the day
Practicing how to efficiently travel in and around avalanche terrain
What to do if you get stuck in a dangerous situation
How to manage changing plans based on avalanche conditions and observations
This course reviews and addresses content from the AIARE 1 and 2 courses. It is strongly recommended that you have taken your AIARE 1 before taking this course. Come join an AIARE-certified avalanche instructor for a fun day of navigation, riding, and learning in the best classroom around!
We target a 6:1 maximum student-to-instructor ratio to ensure you get personal attention and reduce COVID risks. If you are interested in this course for a larger group, please contact [email protected] and we will arrange a private, tailored course that fits your needs.
Please note: All participants are required to carry a beacon, shovel, and probe to leave the base area and participate in a course. Equipment rentals are available, and we recommend booking those in advance. Courses do not include access to the mountain. Each participant in your group must reserve a day pass in addition to your course unless you have a Season Pass or you’re using part of a 4 Pack or 10 Pack.
