Clinic: Winter Emergency Skills

HYPO WRAP/ COLD CARE:

Hypothermia is a medical emergency that occurs when your body loses heat faster than it can produce heat, causing a dangerously low body temperature. Learning and practicing the proper skills is an essential process towards preventing medical emergencies in backcountry settings. This clinic includes:

  •  Learning to identify Signs & Symptoms of cold care emergencies
  •  Learn how to build a “Hypo Wrap” to increase internal body temperature

EMERGENCY SNOW SHELTERS:

Obtaining the skills required to protect yourself from the cold winter environment is an essential component of becoming prepared for emergency situations when travelling through the natural environment of cold climates. This clinic includes:

  • Introduction to equipment, gear and natural resources to minimize exposure
  • Skill stations demonstrating how to build a snow trench, A- frame and a lean-to
  • A timed competition for the most stable shelter
