Please join us for a fun, welcoming, and educational day of “in-bounds backcountry” at Winter Park Resort in Colorado!

In our grand quest to open a backcountry ski area, we will be opening a portion of Winter Park exclusively for a Bluebird Backcountry prototype on April 27–28, 2019. Learn more and reserve your pass here:

Bluebird Backcountry @ Winter Park Resort

In partnership with Winter Park Resort, Bluebird Backcountry is hosting an in-bounds experience for those who want to try backcountry skiing in a more controlled environment. We will explore 200 acres of the resort that are usually closed at this time of year and will be re-opened exclusively for Bluebird Backcountry. (The Mary Jane side of the resort will be operating as normal that weekend.)

You’ll be able to rent backcountry equipment on site, learn and practice uphill and backcountry skills, meet new friends, explore Winter Park in a new way, and generally enjoy earning your turns out on the mountain.

Who is this for?

No backcountry experience necessary! We welcome beginners as well as more experienced backcountry skiers and splitboarders.

What’s this all about?

The long term Bluebird Backcountry vision is an avalanche-controlled and ski-patrolled ski area that’s 100% human powered. In 2019, Bluebird Backcountry is prototyping in multiple locations, including Mosquito Pass and Winter Park Resort, in order to learn what backcountry skiers want and need at a more permanent location. Winter Park Resort is working hand-in-hand with Bluebird Backcountry to help develop our idea and offer a unique in-bounds backcountry event for the Front Range.

Imagine all the comforts of a ski resort: quality terrain, great snow, gear rentals, lessons, guides, ski patrol, food/beverage, and a lodge… but no chairlifts or lift lines. We hope our vision will enhance backcountry education and introduce more people to the spirit and soul of the backcountry.

Pass Options

For this prototype, we are offering two different ticket options depending on your backcountry experience level. The Bluebird Pass ($50) provides a “choose your own adventure” option for more experienced backcountry travelers. The Plus Pass ($75) offers a structured day with group education for backcountry beginners.

Rental Options

Thanks to our partners Ortovox and Cripple Creek Backcountry, you’ll be able to reserve the following gear and then pick it up on site:

  • Backcountry-specific boots, skis/splitboards, skins, and poles ($60)
  • Orotovox packs that contain transceivers, shovels, and probes ($29)

Big thanks to our partners!
